Bladder Control 101

A strong bladder control requires the support of strong bladder muscle systems including bladder wall muscles, urethra muscles, sphincter muscles, and the pelvic floor muscles (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2). An intact bladder nerve system is also crucial for the function.

When the muscle systems become weak, bladder control problems will occur. There are three most common factors that can weaken the bladder muscle systems: 1) Multiple childbirth-the vaginal delivery process may damage the muscles or nerves; 2) hormone changes due to menopause- changed hormone balance may weaken the muscle tone; and 3) aging - poor blood circulation may cause atrophy of the muscles.
